A Gentle Start to a Year of Steady Progress

The Power of Steady Progress
Every year brings a quiet promise: the chance to grow, to realign, and to begin again. Yet many of us start January with towering resolutions — and by February, we feel defeated when real life doesn’t match the plan.
The truth, backed by behavioural psychology and wellbeing research, is simple: lasting change doesn’t come from intensity, but from consistency.
James Clear, author of Atomic Habits, found that small, repeated actions — even just 1% better each day — lead to remarkable transformations over time. The same idea echoes in the principles of coaching and cognitive behavioural therapy: sustainable wellbeing isn’t about doing everything right, it’s about returning to what matters, again and again.

This year marks a fresh chapter for the Swiss Benevolent Society. Instead of our traditional magazine, we’ve created a new way to inspire reflection and balance throughout the seasons — the SBS 2026 Wall Calendar. Beautifully designed with Swiss landscapes and twelve guiding themes — from Renew in January to Dream in December — it’s both a visual companion and a practical coaching tool.
Each month focuses on one principle that nurtures self-reliance, self-kindness, and connection. Together, they form a steady rhythm through the year — a reminder that wellbeing is not a race or a checklist. Our energy and focus naturally rise and fall with life’s seasons, and our expectations should too. Growth is cumulative; what matters most is that we keep moving forward, however small the step.
When you miss a day, or even a week, it doesn’t erase your progress. What counts is the choice to begin again. Be kind to yourself and carry on.

This journey continues through our monthly blog, where each theme will come to life with practical insights, reflections, and coaching tools to help you stay steady through the year.

About the Swiss Benevolent Society
The Swiss Benevolent Society exists to support Swiss nationals in the UK through times of change, challenge, and transition. Our work is grounded in dignity, compassion, and the belief in self-reliance — offering practical help while empowering individuals and families to regain stability and confidence. If you or someone you know may need support, you can learn more about how we help and how to get in touch through our Welfare Office. If you share our values and would like to be part of our community, we welcome you to become a member and stay connected with our work. And if you are able, donations — of any size — help us continue providing vital assistance; every contribution goes directly back into our welfare programmes.
